Star Wars Month: The Good, The Bad and The Last Jedi

I am going to keep this review to be on the shorter side, the first being that I am rushing this since that I haven’t had much time to get down to writing it. The second reason why I am rushing it is because I still need to write three more posts that I want to get out before the end of the year.

The Good: There really isn’t that much good that I can say about this film. But the good that I can say about it has to do with Rey and Kylo Ren, through the first two acts of the movie Rey and Kylo were communicating, thanks to Snoke, about what had happened between him and Luke since that Luke is now living on an island in the middle of nowhere because of the decision that he made. The whole sequence for this is as a storytelling engine is rather well done and it did seem that Rey had hope in what she was doing, trying to change Kylo’s motives, but that doesn’t really go well.

Then we have the next part of the Rey/Kylo story and that is when Rey boards Snoke’s ship and we have a confrontation in which Kylo is ordered to strike down Rey to become more powerful but Kylo manages to use Rey’s own Lightsaber, which Snoke took from her, and kills Snoke giving Kylo command of the First Order and leading the attack against the Resistance. But there is something that I did like and that was the fight between Kylo, Rey and Snoke’s Guards since that one the fight was rather well done and two the Guards looked awesome with their own individual weapons.

The Bad: The rest of the movie was rather bad. Poe’s mutiny of the transport ships was one of the dumbest things that I have seen in a long time in the Star Wars universe since that he had pretty much cost them a lot of people and resources that they needed.

Finn and Rose’s mission to get access to Snoke’s ship, even though was a good plan to do just seemed to be the biggest waste of time since that it pretty much summed up in nothing rather major happening, they get crossed by the person that was helping them get access to Snoke’s ship. Rose ends up nearly killing herself by knocking Finn of course from a suicide run that would have seen the First Order down a piece of heavy tech, but no she could have also easily have killed Finn in the collision as well which just makes me think that the character of Rose is full of dumb decisions.

Hux was just Hux. A rather useless character that could have been easily axed off in the destruction of the command ship.

One of the biggest things that bugged me about the film and what was also a problem for fans but also the person who played him was the way that they had handled Luke for the film. The way that Luke was wrote for the film made him seem to be the most distant character that there could have ever been. He almost seemed to be a shell of his former self since that Luke was one of the main figure heads of the Rebel Alliance, a symbol of hope, but now that hope was gone which just seemed to be rather disappointing that the same person didn’t want to help against the First Order. But there were some rather good scenes that Luke did have and that was the flashbacks that were in the Rey/Kylo story, his conversation with Yoda and the standoff he had against Kylo.

Overall: I think that this film had could have had potential to be a good movie, however it didn’t come over the way that it did. It does however make me happier that JJ Abrams is back for Episode IX but more anxious about that is going to come after with Rhian Johnsons trilogy that he has planned.

Rating 6/10

Star Wars Month: Lando #1

The cover for the issue sees Lando lounging back in a chair whilst we see a silhouette of a woman that sort of looks like Leia since that you can see what looks like to be her hair buns.

The issue opens with the usual text crawl that basically sums up that the Empire are too distracted by the Rebel Alliance that smugglers and pirates are plundering treasures and this leads up to how Lando starts his score that would be the deal of a life time.

The story begins with Lando staring at an orb inside a bed room and a voice tells him that the orb is beautiful and he replies saying that he was thinking the same but then redirects the answer calling the woman that he was with beautiful instead of the orb. The woman asks why he is interested by the ‘trinket’ and says that she got it from an artisan in the city but it’s not worth much. Lando then talks to her and we find out three things. The first is that the woman’s name is Ssaria, the second is that she is a Moff and third he says that he was going to steal it from her. Ssaria think that it is amusing but Lando is telling the truth since that it is also revealed that the orb is valuable and that he wanted to make this a quick job but it got complicated and Ssaria pulled a gun on him. Lando says that he couldn’t steal it and for her to wake up and see it gone, thus having her put out a search for him and then rumours spreading around that she was betrayed by a lover. She asks him why he is telling her all of this and he replies saying that he knows her and she knows him.

Then we cut over to a bar in the city where we se Lando and Lobot where Lobot thinks what he did was stupid even though Lando still got the job done and has the orb in his possession. Lobot, using the Imperial implants, calculates all the that the odds of that working, but like Han, Lando never wants to know what the odds are. Lobot says that the plan that they had would have been easier but Lando contradicts him says that if they did it that way they would have been in more trouble but they now have a given the Moff a pleasant memory. A person comes up to Lando and says that ‘he’ is ready for him and ‘he’ turns out to be an old disgusting looking alien that communicates between three Imp like creatures. Lando says that the orb is worth the debt that he owes him and possibly more and he says that he will let him keep whatever is extra since he is a good guy. Toren talks to the Imp and the relay what he said, thanking him for retrieving the item and then says that the orb will take ten percent off the debt owed and Lando is pissed. The Imps pull guns on and the Imps relay another message saying that the reason that he only took off ten percent was due to the amount of time that it took him to retrieve that orb, but he says that he does have another suggestion.

That suggestion turns out to be what Toren says is going to be a quick job. Lobot doesn’t like the idea since that he really wanted that last job to be the end of this and he seems to be rather dubious that this new job will be the last job. The two of them then head off to recruit a team for their job and they recruit two brothers that have been modified and are capable fighters. The second person that Lando goes to join his team is a person that he has worked with, Korin and like many people he has a beef with Lando since the last time they did a job together he ended up losing an eye. But Lando says that he is also here to make amends and shows him the information that he has given him and when he looks it, he is interested in the job.

We cut over to a shipyard where Lando and his team board and we have a lovely two-page spread in which we see the shipyard with the ship they are after, a pleasure ship that is in the shape of a shark that is just insane which is owned by a rich Imperial. Lando basically narrates out their plan, talking about the shipyard and that it is defended by Stormtroopers but they manage to easily get their hands on the ship and make their escape with an Imperial Officer noticing from a window the ship leaving dock. The officer contacts Lord Amedda back on Coruscant about the ship being stolen and he walks off back and informs the Emperor Palpatine on what has happened, leading the reader to believe that the ship that the stole, belongs to the Emperor.

Overall, I think that this is a rather okay comic, it builds up the story rather well and Lando’s character is handled rather well. The ending is what I think to be the best thing about this since this is what I think would lead up to Lando being forced to work with the Empire from the events of Episode V.

Star Wars Month: Top Seven Force Users

7: Rey – Star Wars Episode VII: I’m not gonna lie, but out of all the things that came from Episode VII, I wasn’t a big fan of Rey and then I got to realise something a few weeks ago. She pretty much has the same characteristics as both Luke and Anakin had at the beginning of their first films, being situated on a planet that was mainly surrounded by sand and wanting to get off there to do better things. The only thing that was different is that Rey was left there by either her parents or a member of the Empire or New Republic. Plus, I also found that she seemed to have a few similar traits as well as the characters I had just referenced since that Anakin was good with his hands as he was able to build C3PO whereas Rey was able to help fix the Falcon in mid-flight. Hopefully here character will be a lot better with the new film since that I think with a small percentile I think that she could be the titular ‘chosen one’ that was to help fight against the Sith but instead of being a Jedi she reforms the Grey Order, which is a balance between the two and something that I will get to later in the list.

6: Darth Maul – Star Wars Episode I & Rebels Season 2: One of my most remembered things about Episode I was Darth Maul for quite a few reasons. The first was his look, a horned alien (Dathomirian) coloured in red and black almost resembling a demon of sorts. The second, his weapon a dual bladed lightsabre, something that nobody had ever seen and it left its mark rather effective. But the third and final things that I liked about Maul was that in the film he didn’t say much and let his actions do his talking by killing Qui Gon Jinn and then seemingly killed by Obi Wan Kenobi during the film, but it turns out that the Dark Side has a lot more power to it since that in the Clone Wars series he used his hate for Kenobi to keep him alive, but since that I haven’t seen all of Clone Wars yet I can’t have my thoughts of him for that, however Rebels is a different kettle of fish since that in this he is very manipulative especially towards Ezra with getting his help to try and acquire a Sith Holocron so that he can unlock it to find what he wants as well as Ezra who has his own goals that he wants.

5: Ezra Bridger – Star Wars Rebels: When I started watching Rebels I wasn’t that all interested with Ezra since I found him to be rather annoying, but when I started watching second series I found him to be a better character and then in the third series I found him to be more likeable. But the most that I did like from him was the progression that he went through at the end of second and beginning of the third with Ezra being slowly manipulated by Maul, helping him reach a Sith Holocron. But with the intervention of Kanan, Ezra was able to prevent from being manipulated by Maul, but it did have some lasting effects as when he and Maul fused the two Holocrons together and they got their ideas mixed up in what they wanted to see with Maul wanting to find Obi Wan as well as Ezra since that he thinks that Obi Wan can help with the Jedi Prophesise with the one that can take down the Sith. Another thing that I liked about Ezra is that he is always trying to do the right thing either going out on his way on a whim, but my favourite was when he was helping train Sabine in the ways of Jedi Duelling. Hopefully in the next series there will be more good development for him.

4: Kylo Ren – Star Wars Episode VII: With this new trilogy of films and all of the possible tie in films that we could be getting there is one film that I do want to see, or even read, that being the change that Ben Organa-Solo went from being trained by Luke Skywalker and then something happened that made him join the Dark Side as well as the First Order. One of the things that I did like in the film was something that came rather late and that was the confrontation between him and his father Han where he did show a lot of confliction on what he had done until the part when he stabs him through with his lightsabre. Hopefully with the coming years we will find out if there will be any redemption with Kylo Ren in a way that Vader had, but the thing that I want to learn is about the Knights of Ren since that in the flashback that Rey had showed that there were a lot of them. But we still have a long time to go.

3: Star Killer: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed: I loved playing The Force Unleashed series for two reasons, one was that I did really like the character of Star Killer since that he was pretty much thrown into the conflict that had happened and two for the fact that you could replay the game and depending on what ending that you took, it would have changed the outcome of the Star Wars franchise. In the first game, if you chose the good side you would have been remembered as a hero and a beacon for the Rebels but if you went down the path of the Sith you would kill Vader and become the left hand of The Emperor. One of the things that I did like about Star Killer from the other Jedi and Sith is that he had a relationship that worked and that even went through his clone as he pretty much went through Hell to save Juno from the clutches of the Empire.

2: Luke Skywalker – Star Wars Episode V-VI: Besides the final moments of Episode IV, all of the best moments Luke’s story come from Episodes V & VI. The training that he went on with Yoda, the fight with Vader on Cloud City where he finds out that Vader is his father and then the final confrontation with The Emperor causing Vader to realise what he is doing and saving him in an act of redemption with Vader turning into a Force Ghost. Hopefully with the Last Jedi out in the following days we will find out if Luke has any more memorable moments up his arm since that he had a cut line from the last film.

1: Anakin Skywalker/ Darth Vader – Star Wars Episode II-VI: Even though that Vader is one of the best things about the Star Wars franchise, we all have to remember that there was a beginning to it all. Seeing Anakin go through his training as a Jedi to then have the same sort of manipulation that Ezra went through but with one big change. Anakin did go through the changes and that was all thanks to Chancellor Palpatine who had slowly started turning him and corrupting him into joining the Sith. Even the reveal of when he got turned into Vader wasn’t one of the best ways to have shown it the ‘NOOOOOOOOO!’ scream has been GIF/Meme worthy for a very long time. But through the story from the original trilogy Vader seemed to have a rather menacing persona and with his appearance in the first film only totalling only about 12 minutes he left a mark on the audience for a long time. My two favourite moments of Vader are the redemption bit that he went through Episode VI since that it showed (literally and figuratively) that Vader wasn’t a soulless robot but that he still had a bit of good inside of him. The second came at the end of Rouge One, where Vader is cutting down Rebels as they send the Death Star data being transferred from crew to crew before seeing the Tantive IV just flying away from him leading then straight into Episode IV.

Star Wars Month: Star Wars Empire #29

The issue opens in the past, twenty-one years before the Battle of Yavin, on the planet of Jabiim where Anakin Skywalker and a group of Clone Troopers are ordering a group of Rebels to stand down but it looks like that he is tapping into his ‘darker side’ by force chocking one of the revels and his eyes turning red in the process. We then cut to the present as the Rebels of Jabiim are overlooking an Imperial prison where they see that the prison is managed by a skeleton crew and even thought that there is a ATST there, but it isn’t manned. Nolan, our main Jabiim Rebel signals for his group to start their attack and manage to take out a Stormtrooper and their numbers seem to outnumber that of the Empire’s troops.

Throughout the attack, Nolan narrates what has happened to his planet with the fact that the planet had perpetual rain and due to the Empire strip mining the planet for material and causing the planet to start slowly dying. Nolan orders the destruction of a communications tower, but an Imperial Officer manages to get out a message for the base to be scrambled and two TIE Bombers start unloading over base attacking the Rebels, but as well as Stormtroopers. One of the Rebels tells Nolan that they should retreat but he says that they could use this chaos that they have caused as their advantage but help comes in the form of a X-Wing, with a familiar looking Astromech on, and the pilot manages to destroy both Bombers. A smaller ship also lands along with the X-Wing and the Rebels seem to be rather cautious about who is here to help.

The ramp lowers and out comes Princess Leia, who asks for them to lower their weapons and asks to see Nolan. At first, I wasn’t sure who this person was since that I had barley read any of the Dark Horse publications for Star Wars and it seemed weird to see her wearing a purple jumpsuit. The Rebels then surround the pilot and we see it to be Luke Skywalker, Nolan tells the Rebels to stand down and that they are their guests but some of the Rebels seem to be rather unsure about them. A bit later, one of the Rebels tells Nolan that some of the captives have decided to join his Rebel teams and Leia is impressed with the way that Nolan has been as a leader and Nolan says that he got his leadership points from his father, since that he was an unshakable leader. They then start talking about the planet and Nolan says that they had spent the better part of two decades trying to get their freedom and that they are close to their objective. Leia intervenes asking if he wants more troops, but it’s not troops that he needs help, that being them to help their people forget about the past and he tells them what had happened with the Republic and a Jedi and then later with the Separatists/Empire and they need to go down a new path so that they can have a future. Leia says that they are willing to show the difference between the Empire and Alliance so that they can save Jabiim.

In space, two X-Wing pilots, Wedge and Hobbie, are talking about how they should be doing a sweep of the area since that the orbit that they are in is covered in debris and it would make it easy for the Empire to make an attack whilst they are on the planet. Hobbie seems to be nervous about what could go wrong and Wedge brings up that there could be something that could spook the Rebels there and make them trigger-happy. They then get a communique from the somebody with the name/ codename of Dantels who says that they are going into the HQ and that they will give them coordinates when they get there.

Back on Jabiim, Hesz seems to be uncertain about the Rebels being here and feels annoyed being kept out of the loop and Nolan apologises for keeping him out of the loop but if word came out that he was seeking help from the Rebels that there would be problems that might come from their group and it does. Duane, who used to be led by Nolan’s father. He seems to be annoyed by this idea but Nolan asks from him just to listen to what Leia has to say. Leia starts her speech to the Rebels but she gets interrupted by one of the who asks what she really wants from them and she replies that she wants what they want, the end of the Empire’s oppression and that she doesn’t want them to lose their homeworld like her. Whilst Leia is giving her speech, a woman that she was with when she landed (I don’t know her name since that it isn’t said through the issue) starts talking to Luke and Luke basically goes on about how weird the past six months have been since that we went from daydreaming of leaving Tatooine and now he’s part of the Rebel Alliance and he doesn’t want to let Leia down since it seems to be hitting him strong. The woman tells Luke to relax and that he’ll be back to shooting imps down. A guy that they were also with tells him that he had become a beacon for the Rebels since he was the one that dropped the torpedo to destroy the Death Star.

The man then tells Luke that he is up and Leia tells the Rebels that he blew up the Death Star and that his full name is Luke Skywalker, which seems to enrage the Rebels, asking if it was the same as Anakin Skywalker and Luke then blurts out that his father was Anakin. The Rebels then surround the two of them and Luke goes to use his Lightsaber, but Leia stops him from using it and Nolan and Hesz try to calm the rest of them and Hesz says that they are mad because the only thing that they hate more than the Empire was a Jedi that stabbed them in the back. Nolan tells Duane to stand down, but Duane isn’t listening to him since that he and the rest of the Rebels want justice and blood. In Space, Wedge and Hobbie get word from the ground for them to leave Jabiim orbit or get shot down ending with them not knowing what to do.

Overall, I did like this issue, since I didn’t know much from the Dark Horse franchise I did feel a bit out of the loop since that there were two characters that I didn’t know and I still find it curious on why Leia was wearing a purple jumpsuit. Hopefully I will find the rest of the parts for the series since that I am rather curious about how they get off of Jabiim and also what Anakin actually did twenty years ago.

Vader Down Review

A couple of years I decided to pick up a mini-series that crossed the Star Wars titles that Marvel had released for Vader Down, mainly with the premise of Darth Vader crashing on a planet that has a rebel base. Plus, this is the series that before Rouge One has one of the Vader scenes that has been seen. And out of the two I prefer this over Rouge One.

Part one of the series begins with a text crawl. This gives the background from the previous events happening in the series since the first part is a one shot instead of being part of the Darth Vader series. The crawl says that Vader discovered that Luke Skywalker was the Rebel that was responsible for blowing up the Death Star as well as knowing that he is Luke’s father. It also goes on to say that Luke doesn’t know that Vader is his father and that he is with the Rebel Alliance but also found a journal that Ben Kenobi had and he began to investigate any information of the Jedi’s. The crawl ends with Vader receiving information from Dr Aphra who found out that Luke is at a Jedi Temple on Vrogas Vas.

The issue actually starts with the image of Vader’s TIE Fighter going through hyperspace with Dr Aphra informing him about the planet Vrogas Vas saying that it is a barren world with no native life forms. Vader asks if there had been anything from Commander Karbin, who turns out to be a Mon Calamari, same race as Admiral Ackbar, who was assigned by the Emperor to find the pilot that blew up the Death Star and that they believe that he doesn’t know that it was Luke that blew it up. Vader then says that he will need to deal with Karbin after he has Luke and he comes out of hyperspace. Arriving in a two-page spread of Vader arriving in front of a three squadrons of X-Wings. vader-down-5The leader of Blue Squadron reports in saying that the drills are cancelled and that they only think that this TIE is just a scout. Vader informs Aphra about the Rebel’s and that he better hope that this isn’t a trap. Aphra says that she would never send Vader into a trap since it would seem like suicide and tells him to get out of there but Vader says that he can sense Luke on the planet. Aphra tries to speak through but it comes out distorted and just says that he is a lord of the Sith and that the pilots should be the ones who run. Blue squadron starts their assault on Vader but it proves to be useless as Vader in his TIE is able to out manoeuvre them with ease and he manages to destroy the squadron. The remaining X-Wings make their attack on Vader and Aphra tries to get in contact with Vader to find that the contact is lost.

In another two page spread we see Vader taking on Yellow Squadron with one of the fighters informing that Vader has deflector shields and tries to focus fire on something but couldn’t continue after being shot down. The fighters then send out a barrage of torpedoes but Vader being the awesome character that he is uses his force powers and diverts the torpedoes around him hitting the remaining members of Yellow Squadron. From the view of one fighter Vader is seen flying from the explosions and chatter asking if there was anyone left from Yellow and that they can’t believe that this is happening since that it is just one man and the person from in the cockpit says that the pilot of the TIE is Vader, the pilot being revealed to be Luke. Red Leader (I think) asks Luke if he has a visual confirmation but he says no but can sense that he is the pilot in the TIE. Red Leader says that it doesn’t matter and that Vader is outnumbered and that they can come up with a strategy to beat him but Luke intervenes saying that he knows what Vader is like as a pilot and says that they won’t be able to stop him. Luke then breaks off and decides to take Vader on one-on-one. Vader tries to shoot Luke down noting that this is a pilot worth killing but then sense that the pilot is actually Luke. Luke rams into Vader’s TIE and they are both sent crashing to the planet’s surface and Vader says that if Luke is truly strong with the force it will not kill him. Red Leader announces that Vader Down and says that he is now on Vrogas Vas and asks for assistance from available alliance forces for assistance. He then goes on to say that Vader is alone with his comms jammed and that the price of him being apprehended came at a steep price leading to a two-page spread of Red Squadron passing the remains of the pilots and debris that Vader had caused. On the planet surface of Vrogas Vas we discover that the rebels have a secret refuelling base and that a station wide alert saying that all infantry is to move out to apprehend Vader.

On a Rebel Ship Han Solo is talking to Princess Leia about Darth Vader being taken down over Vrogas Vas and that they are going there to get Vader to give the Emperor a disadvantage. Leia then goes on to say that the base there have gone mobile to apprehend Vader and that she is sending General Dodonna with a battalion to back them up. Han interrupts saying that she should reconsider what they are doing but then realises that Luke is at Vrogas Vas. Han asks Leia something that seems rather vague with Leia responding that Luke would understand the situation and that Vader is the priority here. I think that this could do with something that happened in the main Star Wars series that I haven’t had a chance to get around to reading yet. Leia heads off towards some ships (possibly the Millennium Falcon) and Han says that Vader isn’t his priority but then tells Chewbacca to get the Falcon ready for flight. Cutting over to the cockpit of the Falcon, Chewie, Leia, C3PO and Han are getting ready to head out with C3PO starting to say that he has a rather bad feeling but Han cuts him of saying that we all do showing a panel of a fleet of ships preparing to head to Vrogas Vas.

Back over to Aphra, she has intercepted Rebel communications and confirms that Vader had been shot down over Vrogas Vas but no word if he was dead or alive. She then goes on to say that she doesn’t know what is worse but she has to go after him either way and seems rather worried if Vader is dead to be then cut off by Triple-0 that they should just murder everyone that they encounter. She then says that they are going to be flying into a nest of Rebel Troops and that he can have his bloodlust satisfied there.

On the ground of Vrogas Vas three grey Y-Wings head over to the remains of the crash site where Vader landed. They don’t notice if he is alive but they notice and they commence their attack on him. But Vader uses his force powers to hurl the debris of his TIE and throw it at the attacking Y-Wings taking them out with ease. With Luke he and R2D2 survive their crash and with Luke thinking that Vader may have not have survived and seeing an explosion (most likely the Y-Wings) and tells Artoo that his original plans of learning to be a Jedi has to wait since he needs to help his friends, as we see Luke and Artoo passing a Jedi Temple. Back with Vader he realises the reason why Luke came here but he gets interrupted by the rebels from the near-by base to lay down his weapons since he is surrounded and on another two page spread we see Vader surrounded by a legion of troops saying that he is only surrounded by fear and dead men wielding his lightsabre ending the first part.

Part two continues off in the page of Darth Vader #13 opening with a splash page with Vader standing surrounded by Rebel soldiers as they ask him to surrender. vader-down-1Vader replies saying very well and then tells them to lower their weapons and that they won’t be harmed and then uses his force powers to activate the grenades on the soldiers, blowing them up. One of the Rebels fires a rocket of some sort (from a tank I think) and Vader reflects it and destroying another vehicle and it manages to cause a large smokescreen and Vader starts killing the Rebels in the low visual area.

With the Falcon on Vrogas Vas, Leia and Han are updated about what has happened so far. Han asks him how they brought down Vader and the soldier replies saying that it was Skywalker who rammed into Vader causing them both to crash on the planet and they don’t know if that Luke is dead since that they have used most of their manpower to deal with Vader. Leia arranges for a group of Rebels to get Speeders ready for deployment but Han says that they should focus on finding Luke. But Leia responds saying Vader watched what happened to Alderaan and that this may be our one chance for justice (and together we can be justice). Han asks to lend a Speeder but Leia isn’t giving him one since that she is using all of her resources to get Vader. Han seems to be rather disappointed by this and he and Chewie decides to go and rescue Luke with the Falcon.

Back with Aphra she is seen conversing with someone over channels but not much is known. Triple-0 asks if he should set out some weapons but she says no and asks him to bring up the visuals on the targets with Triple-0 bringing up information on the main Rebels that being Luke, Han, Leia, R2D2 and C3PO. Aphra asks on how they were going to handle Han and Triple-0 asks if he is fearsome but she then replies that she has never heard of him and decide to focus back on rescuing Vader.

vader-down-6Leia starts her command for the Rebel base and asks for a report with a troop of rebels arriving at the site to discover Vader’s crashed TIE. The say that there is no sign of him there and Leia asks for a report from the Speeders with two of them saying that they have nothing but we then see that the third as their sights on Vader and Leia says for the pilot to attack Vader. The rebels at the crash site inform Leia that the TIE had been stripped and that the Blaster Array had been taken. We then see the Speeder being shot down and Vader saying that the Rebels will not keep him from Luke.

Luke notices the Speeder being shot down and says that this is his fault and says believes that if he hit Vader straight on he would be dead. Aphra manages to land on the planet and discovers where Luke is, wondering into the Jedi Temple and plans on capturing him to get back in Vader’s good graces. Triple-0 says that he is looking forward for human hunting but Aphra cuts him off since that Luke managed to go one-on-one with Boba Fett and came out on top. She then spouts off a list of ideas before heading back into the ship and pulling out and item. Luke inside the temple notices writing in the temple that apparently was made with a lightsabre and starts feeling something and starts getting a vison of two lights saying that one was Ben and then another, darker light and him designating that one Anakin. Luke tries to concentrate on the lights but then looks back to see the lights now gone and a voice saying ‘excuse me master’ revealing C3PO. Luke goes over to him but R2 goes rather haywire and alerting and Luke turns around to then get shocked by C3PO who actually turns out to be Triple-0 who says that he is going to kill R2 ending part two.

Part three continues on in the pages of Star Wars #13. The issue opens with Triple-0 saying that R2 is defending his master. He then gets BeeTee to communicate with R2 where it appears that they being rather fowl-mouthed to each other and they both draw their weapons, R2 with his laser cutter and BeeTee pulling out a plethora of heavy weaponry R2 realises that he is outmatched and runs away with BeeTee shooting at them. Han is flying over the planet looking for Luke and notices a large explosion over a ridge and heads over that way to see that BeeTee has just went nuts. Triple-0 also a little bit nuts wants to take some of Luke’s blood but Aphra says that the blood stays where it is and says that she can hear a ship to then hear a voice telling to ‘drop the kid or I’ll drop you’ and Triple-0 wanting now to drain that person’s blood and Aphra guess that the person targeting them is Han Solo. Han seeming surprised this and Aphra says that she heard about him five minutes ago saying that he has a number of bounties on his head and that if he was Han that he would have shot first and give warning later. Aphra then tells Han her name and that he recognises it but says that he hasn’t heard it.

Aphra tells Han to back slowly away from them and says that she will kill Luke with Triple-0 before Han can even make a move. But Han interrupts her and asks how her droid will kill Luke if he doesn’t have any arms. Aphra questions his threat and Triple-0 recalls that he forgot to bring up some information that Han has an associate and he tries to recall the race, Aphra reveals the race being a Wookie and notices Chewie standing behind him. In the next panel Chewie rips off the arm of Triple-0 who then drops Luke down and goes towards Chewie. Aphra tries to blast Han and vice versa.

Back at the Rebel Base, Delta Squad prepare to head out and Leia is going to lead them with both a Commander and C3PO both saying that she should stay here and act as over watch. But Leia rallies up the troops and heads out to find Vader and this time she says that this time it is shoot to kill. Back with Luke he starts waking up and sees R2 being chased by BeeTee when Luke then kicks BeeTee sending him over a small cliff. Luke asks R2 what has been happening but doesn’t get any response but gets chased by BeeTee and the two of them run away. Chewie is then beating up Triple-0 with his own arm, I really want to know what is up with Chewie ripping the arms off people since that a deleted scene from The Force Awakens shows him ripping off the arm of an alien. Chewie knocks him down on the ground and he starts to exposit saying that not all Protocol droids have 500 mg of Mandalorian xenotox in their middle finger and stabs Chewie with him. We then get a panel from the point of view of Chewie where he seems to be tripping and seeing multiple Triple-0 and falls down.

Aphra continues her blaster fight with Han and Han questions if she was supposed to be smart since that she was standing underneath a hive of wasp-worms but when we go to the next panel we see that there is a nest also right above where Han is positioned. They both fire their shots aiming for the hives and they both hit releasing the wasp-worms on them.  They both then get covered with wasp-worms and Han quotes Indiana Jones saying ‘not wasp-worms anything but wasp-worms’ and they both end up colliding with each other. Triple-0 tries to get the killing blow in a downed Chewie but then gets his other arm cut off and Triple-0 complains about them going after his arms and Luke stabs him through the chest.

Luke helps Chewie out of the cave and notices Han. He manages to wake him up and Luke thanks him for rescuing him. Even though he got stabbed in the chest, Triple-0 is still working and talks to BeeTee saying that they have killed Aphra and that they were going to betray her and kill her themselves but since they don’t have anyone to lead them Triple-0 order BeeTee to kill them. Artoo moves towards BeeTee and squirts the purple stuff from the Sunny D commercial which causes BeeTee to be blinded and then he goes berserk firing his weapons.

vader-down-2Back with the Rebels going after Vader things aren’t looking too good as they have massive casualties and that Vader has taken out their tanks and that the rest of the team are not doing so well. Leia is with two remaining soldiers and she says that they need to keep going but they meet a rather quick death being force choked by Vader who ends up confronting Leia ending part three.

Part four continues in the pages of Darth Vader #14. The issue begins with C3PO alone by one of the transport ships and gets contacted by Han Solo saying that they have found Luke however Leia isn’t that good since she found Vader. Back with Aphra she wakes up and gets contacted by somebody that she just refers to the hairy cavalry. She then tells her droids to follow Skywalker and co to watch where they go and she tells the hairy cavalry the same.

Back with Leia and Vader she says that Vader is going to pay for his crimes. Vader responds to her says that her end won’t be the same as Alderaan but he then gets distracted by something that he can sense coming towards then and asks if she thinks that they can ambush a lord of the Sith. Leia seems to be confused by this and uses this as a chance to run away. Vader tells her to run and lure Luke to him. Leia manages to reunite with C3PO where he asks her where everyone is and she replies that they’re dead. She then tells C3PO to head to where Luke’s last position was and he questions her and she then proceeds to communicate with any other pilots to converge on her point since that she thinks Vader will be following her to her position and to fire all their weapons. C3PO says that it will be certain death but focusing more about how it could be Leia’s death. As C3PO heads off Leia tells him to tell Luke and Han that she is sorry.

Back with Han and Luke, they get Chewie on board the Falcon where the comfort Chewie who is still poisoned and hear what Leia is planning to do. Han says that it’s time to save-all-his-friends-day and informs Leia that the Falcon is in its way and that they are not going to let her make her sacrifice. vader-down-7But they get knocked down by another ship and the crash back down on the planet where they discover another Wookie, this one called Krrsantan and Han think that he is here for the bounty that Jabba has on his head. But it looks like that he is not hear for Han but instead is here for Chewie and they start fighting. Luke manages to get out of the crashed Falcon and Han tells him to go and save Leia. Han says that he and Chewie can deal with Krrsantan since they have the numbers advantage and he then sees Chewie being held above Krrsantan.

C3PO heading through the desert comes across Triple-0 and BeeTee thinking that it in fact Luke. He asks Triple-0 if he can help him and replies Triple-0 notices that he is the same type of droid and tells BeeTee to take him out. Triple-0 thanks BeeTee for his assistance and we now see that he is possession of C3PO’s arms. Back with Leia, Vader arrives at her location asking if he thought her friends would have saved her but Leia replies that they won’t save her but end him and pushes a button. We then cut over to see a squadron of Y-Wings flying over confirming that they had received the signal and Luke noticing that he is too late. Amber Wing lines up a shot to go for Vader but gets shot down by a TIE fighter and several more appear in the sky. The pilot that crashed down on the surface tells somebody to stay the hell away, possibly having the audience think that it could be Vader but in the next panels we see the pilot shoot and a purple lightsabre reflecting the shot and knocking the blaster out of the pilot’s hand. The pilot doesn’t understand and the mysterious wielder says that none of them understand the most elementary tactics and then stabs him with the lightsabre. The figure then says that if the pilot killed Vader he wins and if Vader kills them all he still wins. We then see that the wielder is in fact Commander Karbin, who looks rather robotic, with a Star Destroyer, Imperial Shuttles and TIE fighters arriving in the planet ending part four.

Part five continues in the pages of Star Wars #14. Leia talks to Vader about that how no matter how many soldiers that he sends into battle that the he will never stop the rebellion. Vader says that this isn’t a war but an execution and that Leia’s is long overdue. Vader then brings up the fact that the soldiers that are surrounding them are not his soldiers and that he didn’t call for reinforcements. It turns out that the soldiers are under the control of Karbin. Karbin says that Leia is not going to be put out of her misery but Vader. He then says to Vader that he realised that Vader was being set up to take out the Rebels and for him to swoop in and take the ultimate prize for himself, the prize being Luke. Vader stops Karbin’s troopers saying that he won’t be having any prizes and that he will have a quick death and pulls out his lightsabre. Karbin’s arm’s separate his arms to pull off a design similar to General Grievous and the two of them duel as Leia runs off.

Chewie and Krrsantan are still brawling with each other and Han tires to get a shot at Krrsantan but he throws Chewie at him and knocks the gun out of his hand. Krrsantan manages to get the gun from Han and knocks him away. R2 makes his way to Han where he finds out that R2 never gave Chewie his shot yet and realises that’s why he is getting the crap beaten out of him. Krrsantan holds up a giant rock and plans to kill Chewie with it but R2 manages to shoot Chewie who manages to Hulk Up and punches the rock in the face of Krrsantan and continues to beat him up.

Luke on trying to find Leia finds him back at the Jedi Temple he starts to feel the force around him and hears a voice calling his name. Luke asks if it is Ben and he says that he found his journal on Tatooine and that he read about the temple on the planet thinking that there is something hear that they can use, but the voice says that he shouldn’t have come here as he was not here and that he is not ready yet. Luke asks him how he does get ready but he doesn’t get much of a reply as Stormtroopers have surrounded him. The Stormtroopers start shooting at him and Luke manages to get cover to start fining back and we see that Triple-0 and BeeTee have found Luke. BeeTee communicates with Triple-0 saying that organics are always trying to kill each other and Aphra communicates to him asking if they had found Luke. He informs her that they have found Luke and she tells him that they aren’t Vader’s troops and that they can’t let Luke fall into their hands and he and BeeTee have to do whatever they have to. BeeTee rolls in and uses a flamethrower to take out the Stormtroopers.

Back with Vader and Karbin continuing their duel Karbin says that he has the upper hand since that he had the upper-hand with wielding four lightsabres to Vader’s one. But with Karbin’s arrogance comes his fall as Vader uses his force tactics to use by pushing him away and throwing a statue on him. vader-down-4Vader then manages to slash off one of his arms and Karbin runs away into a cave to hide. Inside the cave Vader starts to hear the voices of the past saying that he was supposed to be the chosen one but he just says that it is just ghosts. Karbin then manages to get the drop on Vader and says that he will take his place at the Emperors side and they continue on with their duel.

Back with Chewie beating up Krrsantan and Han gets into contact with Luke asking he had found Leia and that they needed to get off the planet. Luke tells Han that there are Stormtroopers everywhere and then he gets whacked in the back of the head by a gun. Han tries to leave but he is then caught by Krrsantan. C3PO manages to re-join with R2 and tells him what has happened to him. He then says that he is going to try and get into communication with Leia saying that Luke has been captured by Stormtroopers, the situation being rather grim and suggesting that they would retreat, but Leia doesn’t respond. In the final splash page of the issue we see Vader continuing his fight with Karbin but Leiavader-down-3 standing behind him aiming her gun at him.

The final part of the series finishes in Darth Vader #15. The issue opens up on a splash page with Vader and Karbin continuing their duel. C3PO continues to get into contact with Leia and we see multiple panels of Leia and what appears to be Alderaan exploding and tells C3PO to help Han and that they are going to get off the planet. Back with Vader and Karbin fighting, Vader gets informed by Aphra that Karbin’s men have got Luke and they are heading on a transport. Aphra wants to help Vader and he seems rather hesitant at first but then does accept her help and tells her what to do.

Back over with Han’s group C3PO asks Krrsantan to stop what he was doing to Han and ties to come up with a logical approach on dealing with him, but that doesn’t work as well. Krrsantan punches C3PO and that causes Krrsantan to be shocked in the process.

Vader tries to get away from Karbin and Karbin jumps towards to Vader. Karbin says that there is no running from the future but Vader replies saying that there isn’t going to be a future for Karbin as we see Aphra’s ship starting to crash down onto him. Aphra manages to eject from the ship and Vader kills Karbin. Aphra asks if she is in Vader’s good books but she will only be there if she can get Luke.

C3PO wakes up after being punched by Krrsantan and Han notices an Imperial Shuttle heading off betting that Luke is on it. Vader also notices the shuttle flying off and he uses his force powers to bring it down. Han and co. head in the direction of the of the crash shuttle and find Luke alive with barely a scratch on him. Han asks Luke if there was anyone on his tail but Luke says no and we then see two panels of Triple-0 and BeeTee taking out Imperial Guards.

They head back to the Falcon and find that Krrsantan has disappeared and that it has been patched up. Aphra comes out and says that she has planted a micro-bomb minefield around the Falcon and she has the trigger in her hand. She tells them to drop their weapons, which they do, and Han asks what she wants in which she replies that she doesn’t want to be thrown into Deep Space. Aphra message Vader that she has Luke and that she will extract them in the Falcon. Luke and Han are surprised that she actually does work for Vader and Han asks her if she really does know anything. She replies with the things that I could tell you but then is cut off with a punch to face delivered by Leia. Leia tells to get her on board as a prisoner since that she may have something of value and that Han knew that she would have never abandon them. In the Falcon they head off the planet, Luke talks about his experience in the Jedi Temple and that he was close to something but he’ll never know. The final splash page of the of the comic sees Vader staring at the Falcon.

For the first time that I have picked up the Marvel imprint of the new Star Wars series I was rather hesitant since I didn’t know what I was going to get myself into but after reading it. It did make me want to pick up the series vader-down(which I should get around to actually doing at some point) since that the story does flow rather well, actually it read the same way that the Night of the Monster Men series did that I reviewed last year, it had a flowing narrative and there was a lot of consistency through each of the different issues. I think the only downside that I have to it was not reading the stories that came before this just to get more used to the characters new and old, but none the less it is a good series to read.

Top Five Movies of 2016

So this year I have watched a lot of films in the cinema as well on demand and on DVD and there have been some that I liked and there were some that were rather bad. This was meant to be a top ten list of what I was going to put down for my favourite films but I wanted to get this out earlier and doing a top ten would have taken more time. However, I am also going to do a top five for worst films that I have seen and that will be out on the same day as this.

5. Rouge One: A Star Wars Story: So this is the most recent film that I saw this year and I got to say for a majority of the film it was an alright film. rougeoneThis film is the basis of how the Death Star was built and the group of Rebels that went and tried to get the plans to find its weakness. I did like this film but it seemed to be rather over hyped with critics giving it five star reviews but it seemed that it was about as good as most films that came out this year. I only found it to be more enjoyable when it came to the final act since that is where all the action came full circle and it was really awesome. The space battle was one of the best scenes that I have seen in Star Wars since the space fight in Return of the Jedi. Plus, seeing the idea of a Rebel ship designed to ram into other ships was something new and different since that in the end it helped them get the information about the Death Star from the planet below. Then when you think it’s all over a Star Destroyer comes out of warp and destroys several Rebel ships and starts attacking them with one of the most awesome Vader scenes ever in Star Wars. But there are a few problems that I have with the film, the acting seems rather passable and the direction for the characters seems to be rather bad too. Then we have something that has a rather mixed reaction with people and that is the CGI Grand Moff Tarkin and Princess Leia. The CGI looks rather passible and that it is rather equivalent to what the CGI used in the Battlefront games for their trailers. For Tarkin I think that it would have been better if he was used more for a hologram than it was to be an actual person since then it would make a better choice. For Leia on the other hand I think that it would have been better if it was just seen from the back and that it was just her voice. Overall it was a good film and something that is rather different since that it brings more lore into the Star Wars universe for people who prefer media over the fictional lore that I believe has change since that Disney have the rights to Star Wars.

4. The Jungle Book: Usually I am not a big fan of when movies get remakes but since that Disney really has no new ideas since that they have stated to remake a majority of their animation films and turning them into live action. the-jungle-bookOn the other hand, this film is my exception since that it is better than what the previous films have been. My favourite thing about the film is that the cast is rather well balanced. For instance, you have Bill Murray as Baloo and he is a rather perfect fit for the role since that he plays the laid back buffoon role rather well, Ben Kingsley as Bagheera is another good choice since that he is a knowledge factor for Mowgli about the jungle, then you have Idris Elba as Shere Khan and this is a really good choice since that he makes a really good villain. One of my favourite things about this films is that I am glad that the elephants don’t talk in the entire film which is something that I did find rather annoying about the original. In this they are pretty much the most respected animals in the jungle. Another thing that I really liked was Christopher Walken as King Louie and singing I Wanna Be Like You since that it was rather weird but it was really hilariously good. However, there are somethings that I found rather stupid about the film and that was having Scarlett Johansson playing Kaa since that it is rather pointless since that she was only in it for two minutes and that she was mainly there for a seductive voice and that was pretty much is. Overall it is another good film and that I hope that the next film that Disney are bringing out, Beauty and the Beast, will be as good, even though from the trailer it looks pretty much a copy and paste of the original movie

3. Doctor Strange: I was really hesitant about seeing this film and that it looked rather like the Green Lantern film. But I saw it and I thought that it was a lot better than it the Green Lantern film. The story revolves around the origins of Dr Stephen Strange that is I was surprised since that it was adapted from the comics on how he became crippled and then on how he learned about the mystical arts.drstrange Benedict Cumberbatch portrays Dr Strange in this film and I got to say that this was a really good call since that when people started to do mock up images of when it came to hearing that it was being made that it was a rather spitting image of the comic book counterpart. My favourite thing about the film is that it is has a lot of good comedic moments and that it does have a bit of a sinister feel to it. But there is something that I do rather find annoying about the film and that is mainly down to Dormammu and that he looks nothing like what he was meant to be since that he looked like a badly CGI head instead of a fiery skull. I think that this film does have something really good about it and that is being able to blend mysticism and CGI together, I really wasn’t interested with the CGI since that it looked like that in the trailer that it was going to be heavily just a CGI film, but I was wrong and I really did like the blending that they did in the film. But there is something that I really did like about the film and it came at the very end of the film in the infamous post-credit scene and that sees Dr Strange talking with Thor talking about bringing Loki to Earth and seeking his help to find out what had happened to Odin since that in The Dark World Loki was disguised as Odin. So that is something that I am going to be looking forward to see next year.

2.Deadpool: I found this film to be rather enjoyable, even more so if the repeated sexual scenes were taken out of the film during the beginning since that is why it most likely got it desired R rating in America. I was glad that we finally did get a good Deadpool movie since that his ‘appearance’ in X-Men Origins really did suck, but in this incarnation for Deadpool is better.Deadpool With this we have a twin time line story going on with the current time line with Deadpool in costume trying to find the person that stole his girl and trying to find out where she was and the past story line tells his origins and how he became Deadpool. The comedy in the film is really good and it is shown well in the film, Ryan Reynolds has actually shined out in this film since that the jokes are well timed and also see to be a lot like the comic book counterpart.  I think of the things that did slightly hurt it was the fact that the villain wasn’t really that much of a threat since that he was rather forgettable and the second is that I think the film could have done with some more mutants since that just having two X-Men but I think that is down to Fox or the writers not knowing how popular knowing how popular the film would be. But with the sequel being made there is a chance that we can see more X-Men in the sequel and also the rumours that Deadpool could be showing up in the next Wolverine film ‘Logan’ makes me more interested in the X-Men universe now than ever more.

1. Captain America: Civil War: For me this is most likely my favourite comic book film from this year. The story is an adaptation of the Civil War storyline with some changes. The first being the Sokovia Accords replacing the Superhero Registration Act, Captain America choosing to align with his friend who was a brainwashed assassin that tried to kill him in his last film instead of seeing the fact that he thinks that working for the government since they would tell them who were villains and who weren’t. The film focuses around the Winter Soldier and a person possibly working with HYDRA discovering where a secret HYDRA facility is where it turns out that there are more than one Winter Soldier and that somebody has a book that has the password to reset the hypnotising programme inside Bucky.civilwar Captain America and his rouge team that consists of Scarlet Witch, Falcon, Bucky, Hawkeye and Ant Man decide to head to this secret facility but before they can do that Tony with permission from a returning Thaddeus Ross to create his own team to take down the Cap’s team. This also leads into bringing in the new Spider-Man, who unfortunately is a teenager. They clash at an airport that seems to be rather deserted and we see a pretty awesome fight scene between the two including one of my favourite scenes that involves Ant Man reversing his shrinking tech and growing to become Giant Man and then Spider-Man using the best line in the film taking down Giant Man in the way the Snow Speeders took down the AT-AT in Empire Strikes Back. The film ends with Captain America and Bucky teaming up and fighting Iron Man, in a pretty good fight scene, Iron Man finding out that it was Bucky killed his parents and then Captain America breaks his team out of the Raft possibly creating his team of Secret Avengers team whilst Bucky gets Asylum in Wakanda to find a cure for his brain washing. This is a good idea that does follow in a lot of ideas since that it wraps up elements from The Winter Soldier and Age of Ultron and then it leads into the new chapter coming in for Phase 3.
