Destiny 2 Review

When Bungie announced this game a lot of my friends and I had rather mixed feelings about this game since that we did have a lot of problems when it came to the first game and we were worried that there was going to be problems that carry over. But lucky enough it seemed that some of those worries were gone.

The story is one of the better things about this game since that in the first game, there was barely a story since that it seemed to be up in the air and developed in some pieces of lore, but with this it starts out strong and it keeps on going. Dominus Ghaul is an interesting villain since that his story is well developed over the course of the cutscenes that we see since that he has his own agenda. Knowing of the existence of the Traveller and the powers that it can give to the Guardians and he wants that power for himself. Then we have the aftermath from the opening when your Guardian is ‘killed’ by Ghaul and is trying to get through the assault in the City, there is so much dread and the possibility that all is lost. But once you meet Hawthorn that is when there seems to be the start of hope in the game.

The rest of the story is rather interesting since that the first few parts is mainly getting the Vanguards back together to come up with a plan to take down Ghaul but there are all the usual Destiny fetch/destroy/defend missions along the way. For the rest of the story there were other things that I did like and the most enjoyment that I did have was with Cayde-6 and Failsafe on Nessus since that a) finding out what Cayde-6 got into the trouble he did with a Vex Teleporter and b) being introduced to Failsafe, the Exodus Black’s Computer for the fact that she is rather unique because of her personalities. But the best thing about the story is the penultimate and final mission in which the plan goes off, with some small hiccups along the way but it is some of the most beautiful looking missions that they have made since that the penultimate you get to fight on Ghaul’s command ship where it is about to absorb Mercury to take out the Sun and it shows a lot of the amazing design that they put into the Sun as well as the detail on the Almighty is rather spectacular.

However, the ending that they did for this is handled better than what happened before since that this had resolution. Being able to defeat Ghaul with all your abilities back that he had taken away from the beginning and then when you think that he is defeated the ending cinematic shows something that was bat-shit insane. That being Ghaul creating a weird astral form in which he tries to get recognition from The Traveller, since that throughout the game Ghaul’s main quest has been trying to get the Traveller acceptance for to be given the same powers as the Guardians. But unfortunately, that doesn’t go well for him as the Traveller, who is also bound in a chain-like cage, but it manages to break out of it and destroys the Astral Ghaul. But that wasn’t the end of it, just like with movies a post credit scene appears several Vex Pyramid ships, with one of them seeming like it was a Mother-Ship leading to mean that this would be the first DLC content that we will be having.

The rest of the game is rather alright. The new areas are designed rather well and each have their unique parts. Another thing that I do like are the Lost Locations in which are hordes of enemies that are hiding Loot.

But I did have some problems that I do have with the game and rather currently it has been down to it still being a relatively a new game and that has been a lot of the connection problems that has been plaguing. As a personal experience when I was playing the day after the first weekly reset I was plagued with five connection problems when I was playing Crucible with my friends. This caused me to even show up on the enemy team at times or even leaving the game, which was rather weird.

But one of my major problems that I have with this game are the Nightfall Strike, but not for the same reason why people have been having problems with. My problem comes with the Strike being set to a 10-minute time limit, in which I do find it to be rather pointless. It can be done but it does make it rather harder and more complicated for some players to do since that you would need to do multiple things on top of the actual Strike. I think that it would have been better if they had the time limit set to the Prestige mode for the challenge since that does give it more of a challenge. Hopefully there could be some changes coming to the Nightfall since that this does make it rather stupid.

I haven’t had a chance to check out the Leviathan Raid yet but hopefully in the next week, I may put something in to cover that.

Overall I did find this game to be quite the step up from where I did leave the first game and I do plan on playing through the entirety of this game. 8/10.

Thoughts on Destiny 2

With the BETA for Destiny 2 nearly upon us I thought that it would be rather a good time to put my thoughts out on what I think of it so far from the information that we have been given from Bungie.

Story: This game is set one year after the events of the Rise of Iron DLC that came out, which I didn’t play, and a division of the Cabal called the Red Legion lead by Dominus Ghaul aka Gary, and they decide to assault The Last City and he takes manages to take out the Traveller and in the process stripping the Guardians of their powers. This causes the Guardians to flee and set up a new city in the European Dead Zone and start their own path of avenging and find then also have the Guardians find their new powers. I like this since that this seems to have a lot more story then what was shown for the first game since that a majority of the story for the game did end up coming from the DLC that came after the story was over.

Starting from scratch: One of the big things that this game does is that there aren’t any carry overs from the first Destiny game, which means that everyone gets a clean slate and it also encourages new player to join as well since that we are all starting from the beginning. The way that they showed that this was rather hilarious as well since that during the Red Legion’s attack Cade-6 says the line they destroyed your stuff, my stuff and especially my stuff. Also doing this as well can mean that players could even start coming up with new personal favourites combinations and armour. Which then leads me to my next thoughts. Another new thing about this game is that Peter Dinklage, who voiced Ghost in the first game isn’t reprising his roll this time round. This time we have Nolan North doing the voice and I like this a lot more than what I did with Dinklage since that it sounds more hilarious from what we have heard from him so far. But that could have been down to the direction that Dinklage was given to the script.

New Subclasses/Weapons/Armour: Since that Gary stripped the current powers of the Guardians, they now must venture out and try and find new powers for the game and they do look rather interesting. For the Hunter, they get the Arcstrider which grants them a Bo staff, Warlocks get the Dawnblade, a solar based sword and the Titans get Defender which gives them a void shield where you basically turn into Captain America. Another new thing that they added to the game is that they changed how the weapons and armour. With the weapons, they changed it from Primary/Secondary/Heavy its now going to be Kinetic/Energy/Heavy so that this means that depending on what sort of loads that you like there can be more combinations for loadouts which means that you could have two weapons that you really liked in Destiny 1 and you could use them both in Destiny 2. With the armour, I don’t think that they have changed it that much drastically. From what I have gathered they have changed it so that the armour just reads Armour/Recovery/Agility instead of Strength/Intellect/Discipline.

PvE/PvP: When I played Destiny I mainly played it for the PvE since that I didn’t have that much confidence in myself to do PvP and it was something that I found rather not interested in. But for this I may start doing it for this since that they shortened the player count from 6v6 to now being 4v4. But the thing that I am looking forward to for this is the PvE since that they did announce that there will be no going to orbit so that means that there will be less loading times since that it did seem that in Destiny seemed to be rather long winded with loading screens. I also like that we are getting four new areas to explore, the European Dead Zone, Saturn’s moon Titan, Io which is a planet that was created by the Traveller by terraforming and a planet that has been transformed by the Vex called Nessus. Plus, since that we still have a few months till they will announce any actual DLC would could be seeing more areas being unlocked in the new areas or even the chance of new areas being made.

First Strike- The Inverted Spire: The first strike that we got to see being revealed when Destiny 2 was The Inverted Spire where you travel to Nessus and try and find why the Red Legion are here at a dig-site but not only that but we will also have to deal with the Vex as well. For me I think that I may have a bit of trouble trying to get past the drill since I have a habit of badly timing things. But the thing that seems to be rather interesting about it is that the boss health bar appears to be in portions. But since I didn’t play anything after The Taken King, I’m uncertain if that happened afterwards. The whole mission actually looks like that it could be rather challenging but it looks like that it is going to be fun to play.

Is the Taken King the Best Thing for Destiny?

For the past few weeks I have been rather enjoying playing Bungies latest instalment of Destiny with The Taken King and I honestly think has been better than both The Dark Below and House of Wolves. The story takes place after the events of Crota’s End raid where Oryx, Crota’s father arrives at Saturn to start his revenge against the Guardians who had killed his son.

With this DLC content the new threat along with Oryx is a new enemy type called The Taken. This is something that I do like since it was something new that we haven’t seen since with the previous content which has also added new events in the same such as the Taken Corruption that now overtakes the Wolf Pack mission since that these not only are available on all the patrols and there are different ultras in the different areas in the areas in the corruption zones. Another new area that they revealed was the Dreadnaught, Oryx’s ship, and there are plenty of new areas are available as well since with in-game events such as an enemy movement that causes the Cabal and Hive to fight which then can lead to finding consoles that you can use to start activating enemies to spawn and the bosses have a key that can open a chest that can spawn in the Dreadnaught. Also a really interesting thing about that is that you could pick up a key for a specific chest, but another member in your fireteam can pick up a completely different key. In addition that the keys have something really different to usual keys with these having a riddle on the location of the chest, I think that this is really good concept since it gives you something to think about instead of giving them a icon to direct them to it.

Now on to the story I really liked it. The story starts off with a great cut scene where Oryx and what seems to be a fleet of ships battling against the Queen’s Wrath and the Queen and other members of her court creates a giant blast of psychic energy and blasts Oryx’s ship, but to no avail. Oryx then launches a Death Star like beam that wipes out the Queens army. We then head back to the tower and see that Cayde-6 has a plan to try and infiltrate Oryx’s ship with first getting Eris Mors ship to the ship and then a plan to lead you through the House of Devils to retrieve a hidden stash that turns out to be a stealth drive that can protect the wearer to get onto Oryx’s ship to disengage the weapons. Later into the story when you get to face Oryx I really liked the mission, you got to face off against Oryx in his normal form, which for the regular player could take an easy 5-10 minutes to complete. Overall it is a fun story to play. In the end credits of the cinematic you see Oryx just disappearing and his Sword being stuck in the ground, then you see Eris appear and monologue to her Queen and pulled something from the sword and that she will not fail.

In addition to the story, there is a pretty much large chunk of post credit quests that you can do. Though a large chunk of it seems to be a rinse and repeat mission where you have to go on a patrol mission, do a Taken corruption, face off against the Zealot Ultra and then do the same again in a different area where you need to then go back to the tower and then finish the quest. This needs to be done four times which seems really repetitive and rather boring. Another post credit game play is that they put the strikes available to play with four new strikes to play with one being a giant shank, a giant harpy, a giant sword knight and two Cabal majors that you have to fight together which is a real nightmare if your unprepared. All theses strikes are really good to play through and especially since there are unique armour/class item/weapon drops that you can get for the strikes as well as a item that you can purchase from Xur on a Friday that can increase the drop rates of Exotic Engrams which I think is really good since you can also get new versions of weapons and armour if the engrams are Year One quality.

Another thing that I do like is the new scores that they have added to the game. Usually in Orbit you just hear the normal music but then after 2 or so minutes go by and the music starts to change, sometimes to something more ominous or something more mellow and calming. It’s a real nice change for the game with this music and I hope that probably when I wait during more missions there could be even more great scores to listen to.

However, there is one thing that I do have a problem with Year Two and that is the change of attack and defence stats. I know like me and many people that have been using a gun for a long while that has good statistics and good perks for instance I was lucky enough to get a hand canon called Loner.Rebel, it had pretty good stats for it and I was fortunate for it to already come with great perks. It had Luck in the Chamber, Final Round and Explosive Rounds. I loved playing with this gun since that I was able to beat most of the House of Wolves missions as well as using it on the Weekly and Nightfall missions. So when I did the update for Year Two, I felt rather disappointed that its power levels had went down a lot and I didn’t feel that it would have given me a lot of help through the Year Two missions and then making me rely on the new weapons and armour that comes with The Taken King. I’m really hoping that I can come across somewhere in the game a Year Two version of this gun because I could do with needing for the future since I could always do with a good back up gun and that was what it was for me in Year One.

Overall I do think that the rest of the game is really good, the storyline dynamic is more in depth and seems more of a good story telling than over the course of Year One where it seemed that it was going to be starting off with a story and then it just disappeared and was replaced by more confusion than anything other.  So for the people that decided to give up on Destiny because of the bad story telling all I have to tell you is that you should go out and get this game. Hopefully the next DLC content will be as good as this content since it was really good and makes up for Year One.

Does Destiny Still Hold Up?

For the past two months or so I had finally got around playing Destiny, on PS4, and I got to say that I rather did enjoy the story to the game. Though it does seem like a rather difficult story to follow but the general premise of the game makes it seem like a decent Sci-Fi film that seems to have a reused story. You have a large planet like being, called the Traveller, that is trying to ‘destroy’ the ever growing Darkness that has been growing for eternity, but once the Traveller reached Earth it started to slowly die and with his last powers created to Ghost’s, basically your AI for the game, voiced by Peter Dinklage, you are revived on Earth and are there to find a ship to get back to the Traveller to then meet with other people and start building up your armour and weapons from then on out.

But there is some rather problems that come with this game. Half the time that you are in the social area there are countless times where an error message comes up and it automatically forces you to return to Orbit when you’re trying to either put items into your vault or trying to decrypt an engram, it gets rather annoying rather fast. Some more problems is that there does seem to be quite a few bugs that happen in the game from enemies being stuck in mid air even though they are dead and most recently in House of Wolves when at a few points in time there were times when Wolf packs dropped in and they where they just drop in and be frozen, not moving or loosing health. Also another problem that I happened with the game was when they did a patch a few months ago where they took out all the Blades of Crota that could be summoned in on Patrol missions on Earth and the Moon making some of The Dark Below bounties hard to complete when there is only one mission that has a Blade of Crota.  It seemed rather unfair and unnecessary for them to take out.

Another thing that I found rather bad about the game is that if you do a Wolf Pack in Destiny and are killed and in regeneration you don’t even get the Ether Key to get the chest even though you were there for the fight itself. It’s beyond stupid and rather unfair just because you get killed you don’t get the key when you’ve fought through the waves just to get nothing except for glimmer for killing the leader. I hope that there is a patch that does fix this because I do think that it is unfair that you don’t get the key, it does seem unfair and should be fixed.

However there is one thing clear about Destiny is that Bungie are trying to make this game as big as a series game like Call of Duty since they announced a ‘Ten Year Plan’ for the game where they will be adding new expansion packs like The Dark Below and House of Wolves, and apparently earlier this year there was a leaked image that appeared online that there could be another Destiny game on the way this year that could possibly be either a standalone game for the series or more likely a Year One edition that will contain both TDB and HoW on them making it seem like a more easier and possible cheaper alternative for gamers who did find the price for the season pass to be atrocious.

One point for me that I rather did like about the game was the voice acting by people in the game. As I said before you have Peter Dinklage voicing your Ghost which I got to say I really liked. I thought his parts were well written, though when you do the Patrol Missions it does get repetitive at times. I really wish that he was also added more to the DLC missions so that you don’t just have the protagonists for the stories doing the voice over because it seemed rather boring just hearing one or two voices at a time. There is also a number of recognisable including Bill Nighy the Speaker, Lauren Cohan EXO Stranger, Gina Torres Ikora Rey the Warlock Vanguard, Lance Reddick Commander Zavala Warlock Vanguard, Nathan Fillion Cayde-6 Hunter Vanguard, John DiMaggio Banshee-44 and so many others. It does seem like there trying to make a rather good film alone with these actors and actresses.

But in all I think if Destiny holds up is all up to how you play the game and who you play it with. I had the rather good time since I was able to play with a friend, who was able to guide me through the game and I was able to do rather well that I’m now up to a good level where most people have been since The Dark Below came out. But there have been times when we’ve had to do strikes and we’ve been joined with a person that just doesn’t do anything what so ever at all and then heads back to orbit, or a person who gets up to the end boss and keeps getting killed and decides to rage quit, so I think that it is important to always have a three person team when you play so at least you know somebody has your back. Also once you get past level 20, it does seem to get harder when you do have to try and level up your light because for a while, especially if you’re doing it solo then it would seem like an eternity to reach a high level. Never the less it all depends on how you play if it still holds up. I honestly think that it doesn’t hold up much. Yes, it does have rather good graphics and yes the people that are in the game are rather good, but everything that you have to do is wash, rinse, repeat. You go into a mission, clear out the enemy, use your Ghost to decrypt something and then kill more enemies, go through a long area that is the equivalent of a load screen and then face the boss of the area. It just gets too repetitive and rather boring most of the time. I honestly give the game a 7/10, there was way too much hype for the game and it seems like it would be a good game just to waste away some time and nothing that much serious about the game.
